Valor Water Analytics Intern Blog: Michael Halverson

Hi, I’m Michael!

I'm a 21-year old student, currently studying at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. I just finished my third year there, with one more to go before I graduate. I'm here in San Francisco from mid June-Early September as an intern at Valor.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to play pickup basketball, mostly indoors but also at the parks around San Francisco. I also love seeing live music at the various venues throughout town, mostly rock oriented. When I'm not doing those things, I enjoy exploring the city of San Francisco and the Bay Area, as this is my first time living here.

What is your background?

I was born and raised in Sacramento, California. I currently attend Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, where I'm majoring in Statistics and minoring in Mathematics and Data Science. I really enjoy working with and analyzing data, and doing so for the first time in an industry context has been a fruitful and fun experience.

What do you like about your work at Valor?

I enjoy the challenges and the new skills I am learning while doing projects here. The content of these projects is engaging and interesting. The feedback I receive from full-time employees is always helpful and informative, and I feel my work is directly related to the success of the company.

What do you do at Valor?

My position title for my summer internship is ‘Data Nerd’. Thus far, I have worked on a variety of projects doing disparate things. I have written up checks to ensure that the transformations our engineering team performed on the data given to us by the utility are functioning properly and that the data itself is accurate. I have also designed and implemented an internal analytics kiosk to track our company’s growth over time.
